This season the 49ers have not piled on the yards in offense, but they have still managed to succeed in their running game, which has allowed them to control the pace of the game, and they have been fantastic at protecting the football – they are second in the NFL in giveaways (just 18).
The 49ers allowed nearly 750 passing yards over their final two games of 2013. That means Aaron Rodgers will likely be looking to take full advantage of the 49ers' frailties in the air. However, the Packers will be weary to over-rely on the pass to win this game.
Over the last three games between these two teams, the Packers have managed to record an average of 283 pass yards per game. However, Rodgers as a one man wrecking ball has not worked out well for them when it comes down to results.
That means they must supplement what Rodgers does in the air, with some solid yardage on the ground. Green Bay have rushed for just 70.6 yards per game over their past three match ups with the 49ers, and in total over that period of games they completed just 49 total rushes.
One statistic the Packers must take notice of is that in games where they have rushed for less than 100 yards this season they have gone 0-4. Put simply, if the Packers are blunt on their running game then expect a 49ers win.
That notion is backed up by the fact that the 49ers' four losses this season have come about when they have given up an average of 139.3 rushing yards per game. If they are leaky on the rush, San Francisco struggle badly. Over the 12 games the 49ers won this season they allowed just 81.5 yards on rush per game.
All statistics indicate that of the Packers do not successfully navigate the 49ers' rush defense then this will be San Francisco's day.
