Mexico have seemingly managed to salvage their qualifying campaign just in time with an excellent victory over Panama last Friday. That means they are in fourth place in the CONCACAF hexagonal coming into this game and are three points ahead of 5th placed Panama.
Mexico also have a two goal advantage on goal difference, but that can be wiped out very quickly if results don't go their way.
Mexico need a point from this game to confirm fourth place and a spot in the playoffs. A win would potentially mean they could leapfrog Honduras into third place and steal one of the automatic qualification spots, however, that would mean Honduras losing to lowly Jamaica – Honduras also need just a draw against Jamaica to confirm their third placing and book their automatic place in Brazil 2014.
If Mexico lose today then they will be at the mercy of Panama's result with the United States. Panama are playing at home against a United States team who have nothing left to play for, having already gained 14 points from their 9 games, guaranteeing them top spot in the CONCACAF group and a place in Brazil.
Strangely for Mexico they will have to be rooting for the neighbors and fierce rivals, the United States against Panama tonight. If the USA can stop Panama winning then Mexico's playoff spot is assured.
If Mexico can claim a win or draw and remain in fourth place then they will go into a playoff against New Zealand – which they would expect to win and still make it through to the World Cup next summer. Everything is on the line tonight for Mexico.
Costa Rica vs Mexico will kick off at 9.30 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the Telemundo network or online through free live stream by clicking here.
